Unimpressive in Week 18

Wentz completed 10 of 17 passes for 98 yards in Sunday's 38-0 loss to the Broncos.
The Chiefs entered Sunday's game locked into the top seed in the AFC, so Wentz drew the start in place of the resting Patrick Mahomes. It's difficult to get a true gauge of his performance given that the Chiefs rested all their top playmakers while Denver played most of its top defensive players, but Wentz's stat line left plenty to be desired. Mahomes will be back under center when the Chiefs take the field next in the divisional round of the playoffs.
Set to start Sunday

Wentz will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Broncos, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
With the Chiefs having clinched the AFC's No. 1 playoff seed, head coach Andy Reid noted Wednesday that "it wasn't a hard decision" to rest starting QB Patrick Mahomes in Week 18, per Nate Taylor of The Athletic. "I've been through it before" Reid added. "I'm not too worried. It gives the other guys an opportunity to grow." In this case, Wentz will get the starting nod, with Chris Oladokun presumably in line to be elevated from the practice squad to serve as Kansas City's No. 2 QB versus Denver.
Looks set for Week 18 start

Wentz is expected to serve as the Chiefs' starting quarterback in Sunday's game at Denver with Patrick Mahomes likely to be rested for the regular-season finale, Peter Schrager of Fox Sports reports.
Heading into Week 18, the Chiefs have already secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs, so the team is expected to rest several key players including Mahomes, who has been playing through a mild high-ankle sprain in the past two games. Wentz -- who has played nine total snaps all season -- thus appears headed for his first extended action since Week 18 of 2023, when his former Rams squad faced a similar scenario heading into the regular-season finale and opted to rest normal starter Matthew Stafford. The likelihood that the Chiefs hold out or restrict the workloads of other top playmakers and linemen could limit Wentz's fantasy appeal for Week 18, and Schrager suggests that Kansas City may even turn to practice-squad call-up Chris Oladokun to relieve Wentz at some point in the contest.
Sees emergency duty Sunday

Wentz entered Sunday's 21-7 win over the Browns with 5:23 remaining in the fourth quarter for Patrick Mahomes (ankle) and completed both of his pass attempts for 20 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also netted no gain on three carries.
Mahomes had been bent back awkwardly on the last play of the prior Chiefs possession and limped off the field, necessitating Wentz's second appearance this season and leading to his first two regular-season pass attempts as a Chief. Mahomes was seen with his left ankle heavily taped on the sideline late in the game, so the short week ahead of a Week 16 Saturday afternoon matchup against the Texans will begin with the star signal-caller's status uncertain and Wentz therefore looking at the possibility of a spot start if the issue proves serious enough.
Makes team debut

Wentz played one of the Chiefs' 70 snaps on offense in Sunday's 28-18 win over the 49ers.
Signed to a one-year, $3.33 million contract in April, Wentz emerged from the preseason as the winner of the competition for the backup role behind starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Wentz got the chance to make his Chiefs debut in the second quarter, when head coach Andy Reid dialed up a unique two-quarterback formation near the goal line featuring both Mahomes and Wentz. Wentz took the snap and handed the ball off to Kareem Hunt, who was stopped at the one-yard line.
Heading to Kansas City

Wentz signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs on Monday, Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com reports.
Wentz will compete for a backup role behind Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. His competition includes Chris Oladokun and Ian Book as of now. Wentz completed 17 of 24 passes for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception to go along with 17 carries for 56 yards and a touchdwon during the 2023 campaign as a backup for the Rams.
Future uncertain after lone start

Wentz finished the 2023 regular season completing 17 of 24 pass attempts for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception and added 17 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown.
After Matthew Stafford went down with a thumb injury and missed part of Week 8 and all of Week 9, Brett Rypien came in and performed poorly (18-of-38 for 172 yards and an interception), prompting the Rams to take a chance on Wentz. For his part, the former No. 2 overall pick in 2016 proved up to the task against the 49ers in Week 18, taking the reigns and helping Puka Nacua set the all-time rookie reception and receiving yard marks while turning in nearly as many rushing attempts in one game as he had in eight games with the Commanders in 2022. Wentz still wants to be a starting quarterback heading into his age-31 campaign, and the unrestricted free agent might get one more chance to prove he can helm an offense with the cavalcade of ineffective and injured quarterbacks that littered the NFL landscape in 2023. If that doesn't work out, a return to the Rams to be a quality backup behind Stafford seems like a distinct possibility.
Scores three TDs in spot-start

Wentz completed 17 of 24 pass attempts for 163 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while adding 56 yards and a rushing touchdown on 17 carries in Sunday's 21-20 win over San Francisco.
Wentz made his first start of the season in Week 18 with starter Matthew Stafford resting for the playoff-bound Rams. The veteran backup generated three touchdowns while leading his team to victory Sunday. Wentz will continue backing up Stafford for as long as Los Angeles' playoff run lasts before becoming an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason.
Gets starting nod for season finale

Wentz will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the 49ers, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Matthew Stafford will get a week off for the Rams, who are locked into a wild-card spot in the NFC. Wentz will make his first start since Week 17 of the 2022 season, when he was with Washington. It will be the 93rd start of the 31-year-old quarterback's career, and Wentz owns a 151:66 career TD:INT while having previously played for the Eagles, Colts and Commanders.
