Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday night's contest against Buffalo and will be the 49ers' emergency third quarterback, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Allen will drop to the No. 3 role at quarterback in Week 13 after completing 17 of 29 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing an interception in the team's Week 12 loss to the Packers. Joshua Dobbs will take over in the backup role behind Brock Purdy versus the Bills.

Allen completed 17 of 29 pass attempts for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception while rushing twice for five yards and losing a fumble in Sunday's blowout loss to Green Bay.
Allen was asked to step in for injured starter Brock Purdy (shoulder) on Sunday, and the results were on track for a backup quarterback playing in a hostile environment against a contending franchise. The 32-year-old Allen had the offense scoring just one touchdown while being responsible for two turnovers on the day. It sounds like Purdy's injury may only cost the star quarterback this one game, which would push Allen back to the No. 2 role when San Francisco visits Buffalo next Sunday.

Allen will replace Brock Purdy (shoulder) as the starting quarterback Sunday at Green Bay, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan made the announcement Friday afternoon, revealing that the team was surprised by the degree of pain in Purdy's throwing shoulder when he attempted to practice Thursday. Purdy was listed as a limited participant for that session, which followed Wednesday's capped session and preceded Friday's absence. 49ers GM John Lynch said Friday morning that MRIs on the shoulder didn't suggest a long-term injury, but it nonetheless seems possible at this point that Allen could make multiple starters. Beyond Sunday, the 49ers play at Buffalo in Week 13 (Dec. 1), at home against Chicago in Week 14 (Dec. 8) and at home against the Rams in Week 15 (Dec. 12, TNF). The game in Green Bay this Sunday will mark Allen's first NFL start since 2001 (with Cincinnati). He's gone 2-7 as a starter, with a career 56.7 completion percentage, 6.1 YPA, 10 TD passes and six INTs, adding 34 rush attempts for 63 yards and no TDs.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday that Allen will be San Francisco's backup quarterback behind Brock Purdy for Monday night's Week 1 game against the Jets, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Allen won the gig over fellow veteran Joshua Dobbs. Allen completed 19 of 30 passes for 194 scoreless yards and no interceptions during limited preseason work. The 32-year-old has made nine NFL starts since entering the league as a 2016 sixth-round pick.

Allen completed seven of 13 pass attempts for 98 yards while getting the nod under center in Saturday's preseason tilt against Tennessee.
San Francisco rested most of its starting offense Saturday, allowing Allen to start the first half and journeyman backup Joshua Dobbs to handle the remaining snaps. The latter (14 of 20 for 146 yards) looked better in the competition to be Brock Purdy's backup, but Allen had to face the opponent's starting defense and was also saddled with two incompletions due to drops. Neither signal-caller will be on fantasy radars come Week 1, as Purdy will be running the well-oiled machine that is the 49ers' offense when the regular season kicks off.
Sticking around in San Francisco

The 49ers are set to re-sign Allen as a backup quarterback, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Allen did not appear in a game for the 49ers last season, as he only operated as the team's emergency third quarterback, but he could step up to a more important role behind Brock Purdy for the 2024 campaign if Sam Darnold isn't re-signed. Now heading into his age-32 season, Allen is also capable of contributing in a mentorship role.
