Serving as backup in Week 18

RotoWire Logo Published: 2025-01-05

Rush will serve as the backup quarterback in Sunday's game against the Commanders.

Rush has served as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys since Week 11 with Dak Prescott (hamstring) sidelined. While inconsistent, he did manage a 12:4 TD:INT across nine games while averaging only 6.1 yards per attempt. The decision to start Lance on Sunday likely has more to do with giving him an extended chance to play rather than a true benching of Rush, but Rush will find himself on the bench to close the campaign regardless.

May yield reps to Lance in Week 18

RotoWire Logo Published: 2025-01-03

Rush may start Sunday's game versus the Commanders, but backup QB Trey Lance is expected to earn "significant" snaps as well, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Rush has taken on the vast majority of QB reps since Dak Prescott (hamstring) was lost for the season in the second half of a Week 9 loss in Atlanta. In parts of nine games in the interim, Rush has completed 60.5 percent of his passes, averaged 199.1 yards per game and put together a 12:4 TD:INT. He's also notched 17 yards on 24 carries and fumbled nine times (three lost). With the Cowboys out of the playoff picture, it appears the team wants to see what Lance can do with more than the three brief appearances he's made so far this season, but it's also unclear how much he'll eat into Rush's typical workload.

Rough showing in blowout loss

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-12-29

Rush completed 15 of 28 passes for 147 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and rushed once for two yards in the Cowboys' 41-7 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.

Rush struggled to get much going against a talented Eagles defense while operating without top target CeeDee Lamb (IR-shoulder), throwing multiple interceptions for the first time this season. Rush also did extend his streak of games with at least one touchdown pass to seven when he connected with Jalen Tolbert from seven yards out in the first quarter to atone for the pick-six he'd thrown on the opening possession of the contest. Sunday's poor showing aside, Rush has been solid overall since Dak Prescott (hamstring) was lost for the season, and he'll have a chance to close out the 2024 campaign on a better note when he faces a vulnerable Commanders secondary in Week 18.

Leads Cowboys to upset win

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-12-22

Rush completed 26 of 35 passes for 292 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 26-24 win over Tampa Bay.

Rush delivered arguably his best showing of the season to lead Dallas to an upset win in primetime. He completed five passes of more than 20 yards, including 52 and 34-yard deep completions to CeeDee Lamb, to average 8.3 yards per attempt. Rush also avoided mistakes, as he didn't turn the ball over and was sacked just once. The only disappointing aspect of the showing was that he found the end zone only one time on a 10-yard connection with Jalen Tolbert late in the first quarter.

Three TDs in win

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-12-15

Rush completed 18 of 29 passes for 214 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 30-14 win over the Panthers. He added four rushes for five yards.

Rush took some time to get the Cowboys' offense moving, but that changed on a drive early in the second quarter during which he went 5-for-5 with 70 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb. He went on to tally two additional passing scores to Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks to record the first three-touchdown game of his career and complete the blowout victory over Carolina. While it was a favorable matchup, Rush also averaged 7.4 yards per attempt -- his second-highest mark of the season -- to give him some momentum heading into another exploitable matchup in Week 16 against Tampa Bay.

Tosses two TDs in loss

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-12-09

Rush completed 16 of 31 passes for 183 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and rushed twice for five yards in the Cowboys' 27-20 loss to the Bengals on Monday night.

Rush had a harder time than might have been envisioned against a Bengals defense that did a solid job in coverage for the most part and also compiled three sacks in addition to a second-quarter interception at Cincinnati's four-yard line. The veteran backup did start of in positive fashion with an 11-yard touchdown toss to CeeDee Lamb on fourth down in the first quarter, and he added a three-yard scoring pass to Brandin Cooks early in the third quarter. Rush also took a sack and threw high to Jake Ferguson on the Cowboys' final chance in the fourth quarter to turn the ball over on downs. Rush will aim to get back on track in a favorable Week 15 road matchup against the Panthers.

Limits mistakes on Thanksgiving

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-11-28

Rush completed 21 of 36 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in Thursday's 27-20 win over the Giants. He added five rushes for zero yards.

Rush wasn't asked to do much, as the Cowboys cashed in a pick-six and also scored on a short field to begin the third quarter. As a result, Rush didn't have to be aggressive in pushing the ball down the field, but he didn't turn the ball over and didn't take a sack to keep the Cowboys' offense on schedule. His 5.4 yards per attempt weren't inspiring, but he did throw for at least one touchdown for the third time in his four starts this season. Rush will likely have to be more aggressive in a Week 14 matchup against Cincinnati, which could lead to a better stat line.

Set to play Thursday

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-11-27

Rush (knee) doesn't have a designation for Thursday's game versus the Giants, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Rush was estimated as limited Monday and Tuesday due to a knee injury, but his ability to handle a full session Wednesday has paved the way for him to continue to lead the Cowboys offense Week 13. While he won't have TE Jake Ferguson (concussion) for a second consecutive contest Thursday, Rush will have top WRs CeeDee Lamb (back/foot) and Brandin Cooks (knee) -- the later of whom was activated from injured reserve Wednesday -- available to him.

Remains limited Tuesday

RotoWire Logo Published: 2024-11-26

Rush (knee) remained limited in Tuesday's practice, Jane Slater of NFL Network reports.

Rush is dealing with some knee soreness, but expectations are he will be able to play Thursday against the Giants. Rush is coming off a solid Week 12 performance against the Commanders, when he completed 24 of 32 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He gets another softer matchup against a Giants defense that is 19th in fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks and has only intercepted one pass all season.
